  • Why Study Abroad?
Depending upon the course, you may be able to get academic credit for your university.  Please talk with us to find out which courses are available for academic credit.

About the Courses:

Course Syllabus:
  • Course syllabi are available for download directly from our website (see "Courses in Brazil" or "Courses in Europe")
  • Course numbering:  Our courses are designed to be 300-level courses, adequate for undergraduate students, upper division level (The courses are designed to be specific and in-depth, and would usually be taken in the last two years of a traditional four year degree program).
  • Each of the courses is worth 3.0 U.S. semester credit hours (6.0 ECTS and Australian credits)
  • Each 3.0 credit course will include 48 academic hours, composed of in-class instruction and technical visits to local companies and organizations.
  • Detailed class agendas are available upon request, and will be supplied to the student in their orientation guidebooks.

Transcripts:
  • Upon completion of the program, our host university (ESPM, UNYP, or IQS) will issue the transcripts (along with a signed certificate of participation) in a sealed envelope directly back to your home university.  This document will outline the courses completed, letter and number grades, professors, and more.  Samples of transcripts and certificates are available upon request.

Credit Transfer Guide for Students:

Guide for Students:  Before going abroad
  1. Print out this page
  2. Download the PDF course syllabus - for each of the specific courses you might want to take (we suggest printing them all and bringing them all with you to visit your adviser)
  3. Print out the information about our host university.  Make a note that this is the university you will officially enroll in.  This is the university that will issue your transcripts back to your school with your grades.
  4. Visit your study abroad first (before visiting your regular class adviser).  Show them the program you are thinking about, and the specific courses you are thinking of taking.  Visiting the study abroad office first is good because they will help you many aspects of going abroad, including credit transfer, and financial aid requirements.
  5. But, be forewarned... there is a good chance that your study abroad adviser might try to talk you out of taking the Summit program.  It's ok, that's normal.  It's not that they have anything against Summit Global Education, but it's likely that they will try to talk you into another program (one that they already have on their website, or in their system).
  6. After visiting with your study abroad adviser, the next step is to visit your ACADEMIC ADVISER (probably from your particular school or college within your university).  For this meeting, it is essential that you bring the course syllabus. They will likely help you figure out which type of courses you can take

2-TYPES OF CREDIT TRANSFERS:

1) GENERAL CREDITS:
  • Do you still need any general credits that can be fulfilled by studying abroad? If so, credit transfer is easy!
  • Even if you don't need the credits for graduation, we recommend that you consider... they WILL go on your official transcripts, and in todays tight job market... having international academic experience on your official transcripts will help you after graduation!!

2) CREDITS WITHIN YOUR MAJOR:
  • If you are trying to get credit for courses within you major, see which courses you still need to graduate. Do you need any humanities courses? Management courses? Other courses?
  • Print out the full list of ALL OPTIONAL courses that you could take to fulfill your credit requirements.  Now, look carefully at the list of courses Summit offers.  Is there any chance that any of them might work? (It might not be a perfect match, but normally that's ok).
  • Do your own homework.  Make your own suggestions. (If you rely on your academic adviser to do this analysis, the chances are that you won't be able to study abroad).
  • When you go visit your adviser, you should offer a few suggestions.  ("I think this course might work for this requirement")

Ask your Academic Advisor
  • Which are the classes that I must complete on campus for my degree (and which ones can I take abroad)?
  • What requirements for my major (core requirements) can I complete abroad?
  • Are there any remaining prerequisites that I must meet for my major? How will my progress be impacted by studying abroad?
  • For my degree; how many upper-division credit hours do I still need to complete?
  • Do I have any hours of elective (lower vs. upper division) credit remaining in my major?
  • To graduate, are there any requirements for certain courses to be taken on campus ("in-residence requirements)?

Ask your Study Abroad Advisor:
  • How can I get credit for the courses taken abroad?
  • What is the procedure for getting courses approved for my program of interest?
  • How do I prepare an estimated budget for my program of interest, and which expenses should I plan for?
  • How can I learn about study abroad scholarships?

Ask your Financial Services Advisor:
  • How can I learn more about getting a loan to study abroad?
  • What are the types of loans and financial aid that I currently receive?  Will these loans/ aid be restricted if  I study abroad?
  • Is there a maximum amount of loans allowed per year?  If so, have I reached the maximum already?
  • What timeframe can I expect the funds to be made available for study abroad?
  • Will my current financial aid situation be impacted by taking on any additional scholarships/ aid?

Guide for Students:  After returning home
